I've got a lot of rock on my ipod, some metal.

I have never used IEMs so am unfamiliar with microphonic noise...

The PL-21 are supposed to be more livelier than the PL-30, so they might suit you more if you don't want to pay for the PL-50

hmm I've been on head-fi for ages and am still deciding between the PL-30 and PL-21. I probably will end up with the latter though.

Thanks for all your help, Jason!!

Amy, how are you finding your PL-21? I might get some for myself haha. I'm in need of a cheap pair of earphones to thrash around now.

wait... is this thread about headphones or earphones (buds)??
dont know much about headphones except they keep my ears warm and make annoying people go quiet...
but buds, well... ive been through a few,
I dislike senheiser with a passion, they used to be good, but I think once they hit mainstream they went downhill, and I reckon there are better one you can get for that price.
I did like some made by AKG, K324 P. I the last pair I got from them were about $100,
um if youre lucky on trademe, you can try score some KOSS for about $100, but they are quite funny looking, but they are pretty nice once you figure out how to put them on.
Oh and if you have money to burn try out a brand called etymotic, they have some of the nicest sounding buds I have ever heard, but they are quite hard to find...

oh Jason is right... most expensive is not always the best...
Boom KACaBoom!! Mykee's in the room!!

Sennheiser still make good headphones/earphones. Just have to know what models to get.

Open:
HD555 (alright for the price), HD580, HD600, HD650

Closed:
HD201 (good value for money), HD280 Pro, HD25 (widely regarded as the best DJ headphones on the market)

Portable:
PX100, PX200

Earphones/IEM:
IE6, IE7, IE8

Awesome price-is-no-boundary IEMs:
Sennheiser IE8, Shure SE530, Phonak Audéo PFE, Westone ES3X, Ultimate Ears 11, Etymotic ER4P

one thing about the pl-21s...sometimes I feel like I don't put them in properly so they don't stay very well. But I have ridiculously small ears...

Ended up buying some Klipsch Image S4's today. I think I'll need to get some ear guides for them if I want to use them for snowboarding though -_-

[edit] Review:
Sound stage/imaging: I'm thoroughly impressed with the separation of instruments and placement, given that these are IEMs, they give a very good representation of space
Bass: Plentiful, but not overbearing. Clear, precise and responsive and blends nicely with the mids.
Mids: Clear, but seems a little lacking in lushness and body.
Treble: This is the only disappointment. The treble is quite recessed, and as a result, the music loses a bit of detail. At least not enough is better than having them too bright.
Fit: There are 3 sets of tips to choose from. I personally find the medium single flange tips to fit the best. They're very comfortable and I had no trouble wearing them for several hours.
Isolation: Awesome! When you have the right tips on and they've created a good seal in your ear, they block out almost all outside sound.
Microphonics: The booming sound usually associated with IEMs when you knock the cord is actually really muted in these, and pretty much non-existent if you wear them with the cable going over your ear.
Overall: I'm fairly happy with my purchase. The sound is definitely fun, and even more so if you're a bass junkie.
